Meet Community Team member, Denoja - whose journey is filled with strength, perseverance, and heart. If you see her at the Beneva Spring Run-Off on Saturday, don't hesitate to say hi! 👋

Her Story 💜
I am a South Asian Eelam Tamil Women born in Toronto but reside in Scarborough. I am a childhood thyroid cancer and mental health survivor/advocate.

When I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 5, I lost myself. It was a mixture of not knowing how to handle the treatments and constant hospital visits. I didn't know how to love myself, and the body changes didn't help. I was bullied throughout my life for it, and it took me years not to live in fear or darkness. However, throughout all of the struggles, I told myself that I would not quit and would continue to fight through all obstacles.

Being diagnosed with cancer, a learning disability, and mental and personality disorders has taken a toll on me since early childhood, and still does. I never thought I had a "runners' body". Many people made fun of my size and weight. Having thyroid cancer still affects my body, but it doesn't stop me from getting out the door. I share this to show that EVERYBODY has a runner's body. Running saved my life. It makes me feel strong, alive, connects me with people, and honours the battles I have won and continue to face.

My goal is to represent and empower the BIPOC community through diversity, inclusivity and equity, and proving that running is for EveryBODY.

Who is your biggest inspiration for running? 🫶

My grandma. She was my best friend and the one who ultimately motivated me with my running journey. I wouldn't be where I am today without her.

Why do you love spring run-off? 💜🌸

I love Spring Run-Off because it is sentimental to me. I do it in memory of my grandma who I lost in April 2017. This was one of the races she supported me with. It is the best race to kick off the spring season.

I also love this race because I usually cheer with the best run crews at the best cheer spot - the middle of Kill the Hill! This year I'm running, and can't wait to see my fam from Chix Run the 6ix, Black Runners of the GTA, and the Kardia crew!

Men’s Race: 🏆 ⁠
Jeremy Coughler will be aiming for a 4-peat victory having won every edition of the race since 2022! Trying to dethrone Jeremy will be Rob Kanko (3rd 2024), Ehab El-Sandali (5th 2024), Miles Avalos (6th 2024), Mitch Ubene and Alex Drover.⁠

Women’s Race: 🏁 ⁠
Alexandra Lucki returns to defend her win at last year’s Spring Run-Off. She will be challenged by 2020 Olympian (5000m) Julie-Anne Staehli who will turn her focus towards road races in 2025. Lucki’s strength on the hills and course knowledge will be up against Staehli’s track speed and XC prowess. Also expected to be in the mix are Asia Dwyer, Emily Setlack, Britt Moran, Salome Nyirarukundo and Olivia Roussel.⁠

Race Kit Pickup details – Grab your bib & Columbia fleece vest at:
📍Sport Chek - North Queen Shopping Centre (162 N Queen St, Etobicoke, ON)
📅 Thursday, April 3 - Friday, April 4 | 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
👯 Picking up for a friend? Bring their bib number email (sent March 31st) to show our staff, along with a note granting their permission to pick up their kit.

No race kit pickup on race day.
